Short answer
The five standard bed sizes in Ireland are Single 90 x 190 cm, Small Double 120 x 190 cm, Double 135 x 190 cm, King 150 x 200 cm and Super King 180 x 200 cm. They are the same as UK sizes and 10 cm shorter than most European beds. Measure your mattress before you buy sheets: a UK double sheet will not fit an IKEA 140 x 200 double.
A huge number of Irish homes now sleep on EU-sized beds from IKEA and continental retailers, where a double is 140 x 200 cm and a king is 160 x 200 cm. Buy sheets or a duvet cover for the wrong system and you get a short sheet or a cover that hangs two feet off one side. This guide draws every Irish size to scale with its European equivalent, gives the measurements in centimetres, feet and inches, and does the bit the mattress shops skip: exactly which fitted sheet, duvet cover and mattress protector fits each bed. We stock both Irish and EU sizes, so whichever bed you own, the right size exists.

Standard bed sizes in Ireland
Irish beds and mattresses follow the UK sizing system. Singles, small doubles and doubles are all 190 cm long and only differ in width. Kings and super kings step up to 200 cm long. Retailers still describe these beds in feet, which is why you will see "4'6" on a price tag next to "135 cm" on the box.
| Bed size (Ireland/UK) | Centimetres | Inches | Feet | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small Single | 75 x 190 cm | 30 x 75 in | 2'6" x 6'3" | Young children, box rooms, bunk beds |
| Single | 90 x 190 cm | 36 x 75 in | 3'0" x 6'3" | Children, teens, guest rooms |
| Small Double | 120 x 190 cm | 47 x 75 in | 4'0" x 6'3" | One adult with room to stretch, small spare rooms |
| Double | 135 x 190 cm | 54 x 75 in | 4'6" x 6'3" | Couples; the most common size in Irish homes |
| King | 150 x 200 cm | 60 x 79 in | 5'0" x 6'6" | Couples who want extra width and length |
| Super King | 180 x 200 cm | 72 x 79 in | 6'0" x 6'6" | Maximum space for two, or two plus a small visitor |
These are mattress sizes. The bed frame is always a little bigger, and your bedding needs to match the mattress, not the frame.
Every Irish bed size in detail
Each diagram below is drawn to scale. The solid outline is the Irish mattress; the dashed orange outline is the European bed sold under the same name, so you can see exactly where the extra length or width goes. Under each size is the bedding that fits it, in the sizes we stock.
What size is a small single bed?
A small single bed and mattress measures 75 x 190 cm (2'6" x 6'3", or 30 x 75 in). The continental equivalent is the EU narrow single 80 x 200 cm.
Best for: Young children moving up from a toddler bed, bunk beds, box rooms and narrow guest beds.
| Fitted sheet and protector | 80 x 200 |
| Duvet cover | 140 x 200 |
| Pillowcases | 1 x 60 x 70 |
What size is a single bed?
A single bed and mattress measures 90 x 190 cm (3'0" x 6'3", or 36 x 75 in). The continental equivalent is the EU single 90 x 200 cm.
Best for: Children from about four, teenagers, students and spare rooms. The most common size in Irish family homes after the double.
| Fitted sheet and protector | 90 x 200 |
| Duvet cover | 140 x 200 (or 140 x 220 for a longer drape) |
| Pillowcases | 1 x 60 x 70 |
What size is a small double bed?
A small double bed and mattress measures 120 x 190 cm (4'0" x 6'3", or 47 x 75 in). The continental equivalent is the EU small double 120 x 200 cm.
Best for: One adult who wants room to stretch, teenagers, and couples in a small bedroom. Also called a three-quarter or 4 ft bed. It is not a queen, whatever the label says.
| Fitted sheet and protector | 120 x 200 |
| Duvet cover | 200 x 200 (a single cover leaves only 10 cm of overhang) |
| Pillowcases | 2 x 60 x 70 |
What size is a double bed?
A double bed and mattress measures 135 x 190 cm (4'6" x 6'3", or 54 x 75 in). The continental equivalent is the EU double 140 x 200 cm.
Best for: Couples, and the size most Irish bedrooms were built around. Comfortable for two average-height adults; tall sleepers will want the extra 10 cm of a king.
| Fitted sheet and protector | 140 x 200 (fits both the Irish 135 x 190 and the EU 140 x 200) |
| Duvet cover | 200 x 200, or 200 x 220 for a longer drop |
| Pillowcases | 2 x 60 x 70 |
What size is a king size bed?
A king bed and mattress measures 150 x 200 cm (5'0" x 6'6", or 60 x 79 in). The continental equivalent is the EU king 160 x 200 cm (often sold as a queen).
Best for: Couples who want more width than a double and the full 200 cm length. This is the size Irish retailers usually mean when they say queen.
| Fitted sheet and protector | 160 x 200 (our Queen size; 5 cm a side is within tolerance) |
| Duvet cover | 240 x 220 for a hotel-style drape, 200 x 220 for a neat fit |
| Pillowcases | 2 x 60 x 70 |
What size is a super king bed?
A super king bed and mattress measures 180 x 200 cm (6'0" x 6'6", or 72 x 79 in). The continental equivalent is the EU super king 180 x 200 cm (identical).
Best for: Maximum space for two, or two plus a small visitor at 6am. The one size where Irish and European measurements are exactly the same.
| Fitted sheet and protector | 180 x 200 (180 x 220 for a longer mattress) |
| Duvet cover | 240 x 220, or 260 x 220 if your duvet is that size |
| Pillowcases | 2 x 60 x 70 |
What size is a toddler bed?
A toddler mattress measures 70 x 140 cm (2'4" x 4'7", or 28 x 55 in). It is the same size in Ireland, the UK and across the EU.
Best for: Ages one to about four, as the first bed after the cot. Low to the floor and short enough to keep a cot mattress feel while the child gets used to a bed.
| Waterproof protector | 70 x 140 |
| Duvet | From 12 months only, 4.5 tog or lighter |
| Duvet cover | 120 x 150 toddler size, or a 140 x 200 single from about age three |
What size is a cot bed mattress?
A cot mattress measures 60 x 120 cm (2'0" x 3'11", or 24 x 47 in). It is the same size in Ireland, the UK and across the EU.
Best for: Babies from birth to around three. Cot mattresses are firm and about 10 cm deep, so protectors and sheets for cots have a shallow 10 cm wall.
| Waterproof protector | 60 x 120 with a 10 cm wall |
| Fitted sheet | 60 x 120 |
| Duvet | None under 12 months; use a sleeping bag or cellular blanket |
How do Irish bed sizes compare with EU, IKEA and US sizes?
European beds are 200 cm long across the board and use different widths. IKEA Ireland sells mainly EU sizes (90 x 200, 140 x 200, 160 x 200 and 180 x 200), which is the single biggest reason Irish shoppers end up with bedding that does not fit. US sizes are different again, and a US "queen" or "king" is wider than anything sold as standard here.
| Name | Ireland / UK | EU / IKEA | USA |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single / Twin | 90 x 190 cm | 90 x 200 cm (also 80 x 200, 100 x 200) | 97 x 191 cm |
| Small Double | 120 x 190 cm | 120 x 200 cm | No equivalent |
| Double / Full | 135 x 190 cm | 140 x 200 cm | 137 x 191 cm |
| King / Queen | 150 x 200 cm (King) | 160 x 200 cm (EU King, often called Queen) | 152 x 203 cm (Queen) |
| Super King | 180 x 200 cm | 180 x 200 cm (EU Super King) | 193 x 203 cm (King) |
| Grand King | Rare | 200 x 200 cm | Cal King 183 x 213 cm |
The two mistakes that cause most returns: buying a UK double (135 x 190) fitted sheet for an EU double (140 x 200) mattress, where the extra 10 cm of length means the corners will not reach; and buying a UK king (225 x 220) duvet cover for an EU king (160 x 200) bed, which works, but only if you also own a 225 x 220 duvet. If in doubt, measure the mattress (see how to measure below) and ignore the label on the bed.
Is there a queen size bed in Ireland?
There is no official queen size in Ireland. When an Irish retailer says "queen", they almost always mean a King (150 x 200 cm), because it is close to the US queen (152 x 203 cm). When a European retailer or IKEA says queen, they mean 160 x 200 cm, which is the EU king. So a "queen" can be either 150 or 160 cm wide depending on who is selling it. For bedding, that 10 cm difference is real: a 150 cm mattress takes a 150 or 160 cm fitted sheet, while a 160 cm mattress needs a 160 cm sheet or the corners will pop off.
Is 160 x 200 enough for two people? Yes. It gives each person 80 cm of width, the same as an EU single each, and it is the most popular couples' size across mainland Europe.
What depth of fitted sheet do I need?
A fitted sheet has to match three measurements: width, length and depth. Width and length should equal the mattress or sit within about 5 cm over. Depth is the one people forget. A standard Irish mattress is 20 to 25 cm deep, a pocket sprung or hybrid is often 28 to 35 cm, and a mattress with a topper on it can pass 35 cm. Our standard cotton fitted sheets have a 30 cm wall, and our jersey and waterproof ranges go to 40 cm for deeper mattresses.
If your mattress is 220 cm long (common on EU king and super king beds, and on longer hotel-style mattresses), pick the 220 cm length option, which we carry in 90, 160, 180 and 200 cm widths.

How do I measure my mattress properly?
- Strip the bed and measure the bare mattress, not the frame or the headboard.
- Measure width and length across the top with a tape measure, corner to corner. Round to the nearest 5 cm. If you get 137 x 191 cm you have an Irish double (135 x 190); if you get 140 x 200 cm you have an EU double.
- Measure depth from the top surface to the bottom edge, including any topper you leave on. Add 3 to 5 cm and choose a sheet or protector with at least that wall depth.
Write the three numbers on a note in your phone. Every bedding decision for that bed can then be made in ten seconds.

Frequently asked questions
What size is a double bed in Ireland in cm?
A standard Irish double bed is 135 cm wide by 190 cm long (4'6" x 6'3"). If your double came from IKEA or a European retailer, it is probably 140 x 200 cm. Measure the mattress to be sure before buying sheets.
Is a small double the same as a three quarter bed?
Yes. A small double, three quarter bed and "4 foot bed" all describe the same 120 x 190 cm mattress (120 x 200 cm in EU sizing). It takes a 120 x 200 fitted sheet and a 200 x 200 duvet cover.
Will a UK double duvet cover fit an EU 140 x 200 bed?
Yes. Both UK and EU double duvets are 200 x 200 cm, so a 200 x 200 cover fits either bed. The fitted sheet is where the two systems differ: an EU 140 x 200 mattress needs a 140 x 200 sheet, not a UK 135 x 190.
What depth fitted sheet do I need?
Measure the mattress depth and add 3 to 5 cm. Most Irish mattresses are 20 to 25 cm, so a 30 cm wall is right. Pocket sprung, hybrid or topped mattresses over 28 cm need a 35 to 40 cm wall, which we offer in our jersey fitted sheets and waterproof protectors.
Are Irish and UK bed sizes the same?
Yes. Ireland uses the UK sizing system: single 90 x 190, small double 120 x 190, double 135 x 190, king 150 x 200 and super king 180 x 200 cm. UK-sized bedding fits Irish beds and vice versa.
Is 160 x 200 a queen or a king?
In Europe, 160 x 200 cm is called a king by most manufacturers and a queen by IKEA and some retailers. In Ireland there is no official queen size; the closest Irish size is the 150 x 200 cm king. Either way, a 160 x 200 mattress takes a 160 x 200 fitted sheet and a 240 x 220 duvet cover.
